Impact of U.S. tariff increase on China's silicon carbide exports

The United States since April 2025 to implement the “reciprocal tariff” policy, silicon carbide as China's exports to the United States as one of the main products (2024 exports of more than 110,000 tons, accounting for 32% of total exports), facing tariff cost doubling pressure. China's silicon carbide enterprises in the short term no significant fluctuations, but the raw material end of the smelting process dependent on U.S. imports of petroleum coke may be hindered by tariff barriers, exacerbating market uncertainty.

China's refractories patent technology breakthrough

Wuhan Iron and Steel Group Refractories Company announced on April 22, the new “continuous casting blowing argon plug rod” preparation technology patent, the technology through the optimization of the material structure and process parameters, can enhance the uniformity of argon distribution in the continuous casting process, to extend the service life of the equipment, and further consolidate China's R&D advantages in the field of special refractories.

Refractory raw materials market fluctuations

  • Bauxite: The price of high-grade bauxite is rising due to the tight supply of ore in Shanxi; low-grade products are supported by the cost to maintain stability.
  • Corundum: White corundum benchmark price down 250 yuan / ton to about 3000 yuan / ton, brown corundum due to shrinking demand for price cuts 50-100 yuan / ton, some companies into the loss range.
  • Magnesium sand: Electrofused magnesium sand was affected by the rising cost of magnesite and the factor of electricity price, enterprises mostly held a wait-and-see attitude, and the price maintained a high level.
